NEW YORK (September 25, 2019)—A new global effort to close the gap on data for development was launched today on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. The Data for Now initiative will put recent technological advances to work, to urgently fill crucial data gaps.

As leaders gather in New York this week for the UN’s High-Level Political Forum, the annual follow-up forum for the Sustainable Development Goals, data is an increasingly recognized priority on the road to 2030.

The Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data is embracing the strengthened focus on data, more cooperation and partnerships, and new engagements with existing data champions.

Last week, the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) and Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced the 21 projects from 17 developing countries that will be awarded $1.5 million USD worth of cloud services, grants, and technical support through the Earth Observation Cloud Credits Programme.
