Data disaggregation is essential to identifying and monitoring marginalized population groups’ situations and fulfilling the promise to leave no one behind. Much progress has been made to develop a minimum disaggregation set and disaggregation standards for all sustainable development goal indicators. There is a growing recognition that better data disaggregation is required to identify and ‘reach the furthest behind first’ as inequalities often overlap or ‘intersect’ in ways that create and increase inequalities.

This 2021 United Nations Statistical Commission event, organized by the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data, and the UN Statistical Division, shares the practical steps NSOs and organizations are taking to implement multidimensional disaggregation and distill learnings and principles to inform others’ approaches. The UK Office for National Statistics and the National Administrative Department of Statistics of Colombia shared their approaches and learnings.
