About the initiative
In 2024, the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data partnered with Colombia Diversa and Red Sin Violencia LGBTI to establish a space for dialogue and action towards creating and implementing a regional data agenda. This project is specifically focused on using data to protect LGBTIQ+ people's rights and improve their lives.
While there is a mandate for States to gather data on human rights violations against LGBTIQ+ people, in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) the process is not well coordinated between actors, resulting in incomplete data. There is currently no technical or conceptual framework that serves as a guide in LAC (or globally) for the production of statistics on the LGBTQ+ population. Without comprehensive and reliable data, processes for informed policy and decision making are hindered.
To effect change, civil society groups (CSOs), statistics institutes, academics, human rights institutions, multilateral organizations, governments, and other players need to collaborate and coordinate their efforts for improved data.
This entails the consolidation of existing data systems and statistical institutes recognizing the importance of incorporating various stakeholders in the production of official statistics, looking beyond traditional modes of information production to consider diverse differential views.
To this end, this initiative will create a space for all relevant actors in the data ecosystem throughout the LAC region, with the aim of establishing a regional agenda on LGBTIQ+ data and improved coordination.
