Nigeria officially became an Inclusive Data Charter (IDC) Champion in February 2022, committing to strengthening inclusion, coordination, evidence-based planning, decision-making, and resource allocation in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) principle of ‘leaving no one behind’ and the five principles of the IDC.

To drive the action plan, Nigeria established a technical working group on IDC, coordinated by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDGs) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), supported by Sighstavers, which is also an IDC champion organization. The technical working group also included relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, as well as representatives of marginalized groups.

Nigeria joined the IDC as a demonstration of its commitment to the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, following the realignment of the National Statistical System with the requirements and indicators of the SDGs.

When the IDC was presented to us, we recognized the opportunity to strengthen our National Statistical System by ensuring the inclusivity of our datasets and statistical production processes in Nigeria.

The IDC Action Plan for Nigeria will strengthen the availability of more granular data, greater political commitment, and support for evidence-based decision-making and interventions for vulnerable and marginalized groups in line with the principles of the SDGs.

The plan outlines a series of principles and strategic actions to foster a culture of data inclusivity, promote the collection of disaggregated data to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of data management, allocate resources, and drive more targeted interventions that will benefit all.

This launch is a big milestone for Nigeria, as it serves as a blueprint for the relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), and institutions at both National and Sub-national levels to adopt based on their priorities and local context in given Nigeria’s decentralized context, which comprises of the Statistics Agencies and line MDAs at both national and sub-national levels.
