Project Liberty Institute is a 501(c)(3) organization that serves as a major catalyst for tech, policy and business solutions that improve people’s voice, choice and stake in the digital economy.
Central to Project Liberty Institute’s mission is the stewardship of the Decentralized Social Networking Protocol (DSNP), a public-interest infrastructure protocol available as a public utility. DSNP supports a new era of innovation that empowers people over platforms and serves the common good.
Through research, expert consultations and multistakeholder engagement, Project Liberty Institute generates insights and solutions shaping frameworks for how we design, invest in, deploy, and govern new technologies. The Institute supports timely, actionable research on digital technology and responsible innovation. Its academic partners include Stanford University, Georgetown University, Harvard, MIT and other leading institutions.
Priorities as a partner of the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data
Overall, Project Liberty Institute (PLI) is committed to building a healthier digital ecosystem by shifting power over data from centralized platforms to people and communities. This work directly supports the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions).
PLI's exploration of data cooperatives and community-based governance models empowers individuals with control, agency, and stake in how their data is used—helping address digital exclusion and aligning with Goal 1 (No Poverty) and Goal 5 (Gender Equality), particularly as marginalized groups often face disproportionate disadvantages in the current data economy.
By working across sectors and geographies to influence policy and develop actionable frameworks, PLI is using data as a tool not only to change minds and influence policy, but to build a digital future that advances prosperity for all a core principle of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
