There has been a momentous shift towards rethinking data ethics and norms in recent years. Public interest and scrutiny of data and statistics increased exponentially during the COVID-19 pandemic, with national statistical offices and other data producers responding rapidly.
The energy and enthusiasm for reconsidering and advancing trust and ethics in data has been captured and reflected in the Data Values Project - a two-year, collective effort to articulate a clearer stance on normative considerations that should guide data in development, coordinated by the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data’s Technical Advisory Group and secretariat.
Through the Data Values Project, over 355 individuals across 63 countries explored and identified the aspects that should underpin ethical data production, governance and use. The data for development community has developed a common agenda encapsulated in the Data Values manifesto and white paper. Now, we need to put it into practice.
This session provides an opportunity to reflect on how far our community has come on issues around data ethics, as well as how we will work together to take this agenda forward. The session will surface a diverse range of perspectives on what a values-driven data agenda looks like and new ideas, solutions, and innovations for how it can be put into practice in a range of contexts and institutions.
There will be a concerted focus on hearing from underrepresented perspectives and on surfacing the commonalities and differences between different stakeholders expectations and experiences of data ethics, values and standards. We will explore the trade-offs and realities of shifting power in data systems.
The session will open with very short video and audio snippets from community representatives across the world on why we need to reimagine data and power to spark the audience’s imagination and set the scene for a dynamic and compelling dialogue. Following this, there will be a short audience poll to engage attendees. We will then host a moderated panel discussion with leaders, with significant time allocated for audience inputs and questions.
Through this session, we aim for participants to be better informed about and inspired to act on a values-driven data agenda. We seek to increase understanding between different stakeholder groups on data values, creating the basis for new and renewed multi-stakeholder partnerships.
