Partners, donors, and the data community gather in Paramaribo, Suriname on October 3 for the launch of the new report: Data to Monitor Environmental Impacts in Suriname.
Since 2022, the Global Partnership has been working with the Government of Suriname, along with local and international partners, on a project to monitor artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) in Suriname using Earth Observations (EO), to produce better and more reliable data for policymakers.
The report shares insights from a pilot project utilizing EO data in a remote region of the country where ASGM is prevalent but it's difficult to collect data by traditional methods due to the remote location.
The policy report provides recommendations for the government and companies in the gold mining sector in Suriname. These include reporting mechanisms, case studies, and developing an institutional framework. The launch event is an opportunity to discuss the findings, policy recommendations, and possible next steps.
