Mohamed Gele, an African CAN Fellow from Somalia,

Emerging technologies like machine learning are still new in Somalia’s government institutions. This presents a huge opportunity for more informed, cost-effective decision-making...This fellowship didn’t just open new doors. It showed me I can contribute not only nationally, but globally.

Mohamed Gele, African CAN Data Science Fellow (Somalia)

Learners were mentored by experienced data scientists and instructors from the training providers. Peer-to-peer learning ran through the Africa CAN training program; since cohort two, participants were put into smaller groups where they could work together on projects, support and learn from each other.

The Africa CAN Data Science Fellows drove impact in their respective host institutions, leading projects with potential national and regional scale. They learned how to move the needle from research to innovative solutions while navigating challenges such as data access and stakeholder buy-in.
