Citizen-generated data (CGD) is data that people or their organizations produce to directly monitor, demand or drive change on issues that affect them. It can provide timely and granular data on community issues, supplementing other data sources and helping to shape policies that are responsive to community needs. This complementary data source creates new spaces for citizens and government to interact, supporting the inclusion of everyday people in public decision-making processes. This valuable data source for national statistical offices can help fill evidence gaps.
This UN 53rd Statistical Commission side event focused on citizen-generated data, how it is produced, and how it can be used to accompany official statistics and national statistical office work. The Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data was joined by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, PARIS21, and UN Women.
