If you do not know where your next meal will come from, it is hard to think about much else. 795 million people face this reality every day, even though there is enough food in the world for everyone.

Data can help farmers predict when to plant and harvest their crops and help them get a fair price for their produce. The International Center for Tropical Agriculture and the Colombian Rice Growers Federation created a computer model using data on crop growth and weather patterns to advise farmers which crops to plant. In 2013, it saved farmers from wasting US$3.8 million on seeds and agricultural inputs during a drought.

But major challenges remain. For nutrition, only 74 of 193 countries have sufficient data on which to make a meaningful assessment of progress on five global maternal and child nutrition targets.

"The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little."

Franklin D. Roosevelt
