Flowminder is a non-profit organization that specializes in the analysis of mobility data, satellite imagery, and household survey data for humanitarian and international development purposes.

Its mission is to enable decision makers to access the data they need to transform the lives of vulnerable people, at scale.

Flowminder is striving to create a world in which decisions that can improve the lives of vulnerable people are based on the most appropriate evidence.

The organisation partners with decision makers and key stakeholders in national and international data systems to produce high-quality data, strengthen capacity, develop new methods and tools, and leverage novel data sources to improve the lives of vulnerable populations.

Flowminder researchers pioneered the use of mobile operator data to monitor and predict population displacement (Haiti earthquake 2010). Flowminder researchers were also the first to respond to a large-scale infectious disease epidemic (the Haiti cholera outbreak in 2010) using mobile operator data, and to show that mobile operator data can predict the spatial spread of an infectious disease (Nature Sci. Rep. 2015). Flowminder researchers and analysts have been working for over ten years on the use of mobile operator data for humanitarian and development purposes, whilst preserving the privacy of mobile network subscribers. The organization has developed sustainable partnerships with numerous mobile network operators in low- and middle-income countries.

Flowminder’s multidisciplinary team of experts includes epidemiological researchers, data scientists, software developers, and humanitarian practitioners. Flowminder is one of the implementing partners of the GRID3 programme.

Flowminder is a non-profit organisation registered in Stockholm, with staff based in Stockholm, Southampton and Geneva.

Priorities as a partner of the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data

Flowminder is committed to improving public health and welfare in low- and middle-income countries by providing global public goods in the form of the collection, aggregation, integration, and analysis of anonymous mobile operator data, satellite, and household survey data.

Flowminder’s high-resolution tools enable us to map the distributions, characteristics, and movements of vulnerable populations and help save lives by providing analyses and decision support to all relevant parties, based on our latest academic advances.
