Sargassum is a type of seaweed known for its ability to form large masses or clumps in the ocean, directly affecting the coasts of the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean. Currently there is no official record for the measurement and incidence of sargassum. The information available depends  on the data collected by the private sector; however, it does not cover all the areas affected.

In this session, the room will be divided into 3 multidisciplinary teams of 5 people. A facilitator will accompany each team in the development of ideas and proposals.

Groups will be invited to prepare proposals on how to address the complexity of measuring sargassum and its impact on the environment. The proposal must respond to how we transform this measurement into official statistics, which can be available to users for decision makers and used for the formulation and monitoring of public policies.

Each group presents its proposal, a general exchange of the entire group. The speaker summarizes the session of the relevant points and generates the commitment to articulate the proposals for the possible creation of a measurement methodology to be implemented by both the National Statistics Office, the National Statistical System and other statistics producers.
