Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) was created by resolution 106(VI) of the Economic and Social Council, of February 25, 1948, and began operating that same year. The scope of work of the Commission was later expanded to include the Caribbean countries, and by resolution 1984/67 of July 27, 1984, the Economic Council decided to change its name to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean. Caribbean (ECLAC); The Spanish acronym, CEPAL, remains unchanged.
ECLAC, headquartered in Santiago, Chile, is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations. It was founded with the purpose of contributing to the economic development of Latin America, coordinating actions aimed at this goal and strengthening economic ties between countries and with other nations in the world. Later, the promotion of the social development of the region was included among its primary objectives.
