If we do not have accurate birth registration, all 'per capita' information about that country is, at best, an estimate. If a birth is not registered, that person does not exist. This is the case for one in three births every year. Without an identity, justice is not possible and people are not able to participate in society. Civil registration data must be collated to ensure that vital statistics systems can provide up-to-date population information for government planning.

No matter how many other goals we achieve, without peace and justice, everything else can so easily come crashing down. Citizens should be able to have a say in how their country is run. They should be able to get hold of data that shows what governments and companies are doing and hold them to account for their actions.

"Every time we turn our heads the other way when we see the law flouted, when we tolerate what we know to be wrong, when we close our eyes and ears to the corrupt because we are too busy or too frightened, when we fail to speak up and speak out, we strike a blow against freedom and decency and justice."

Robert F. Kennedy

What Do We Know About the Value of Data?

There is strong rhetorical consensus that better data are a prerequisite to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and leaving no one behind, but the demand for better data has not translated into corresponding growth in funding. To confront this challenge, this paper seeks to better understand what we know about the value of data. How have economists and other researchers attempted to measure the value of data and how well do they do at painting the picture of what data are really worth?
